Posted 1/18/12- Bulgaria bans fracking, blocks Chevron.

Bulgarian lawmakers today banned hydraulic fracturing throughout the country and established a 100 million-lev ($65 million) fine for offenders, thwarting Chevron Corp.’s plans to explore for natural-gas deposits in Balkan farm country.

This makes Bulgaria the second country in the European Union after France to ban the process, because of its potential impacts on air and water quality.

The lawmakers took this action following public demonstrations by thousands of Bulgarian citizens concerned about the health, safety and environmental consequences of the chemical-intensive process of fracking.
